How To Plant a Tree
1. Locate a clear, open site for your tree with generous rooting area and good drainage.
2. Dig a hole two times larger than the root system being planted. Plant tree at same level as it grew in the nursery. A hole 24 inches is generally adequate.
3. Neatly cut away any broken or damaged roots and branches with sharp pruning tools.
4. In the hole, make a mound of soil and spread the tree's roots out and down over it. Add soil, watering when the hole is half full and again when it's full to settle the soil. Pat the soil to firm it, but don't eliminate vital air spaces by stamping it down.
5. When filling hole use soil that came from the site. Amend with top soil if needed.
6. Spread 2"-3" of mulch over the planting area, but do not place it up against tree. Make sure tree has plenty of water throughout the year. Wait until next year to fertilize.
7. Do not stake unless the tree has a large crown, or if the planting is on a site where wind or people my push the tree over. Stake for a maximum of one year.
